This website was created because of a need in our library for a list of music resources. I have found that reference
librarians who do not specialize in music view the subject almost as a foreign language and appear hesitant to offer
help to music students. The idea for the resource came from watching reference staff at various universities and from
viewing similar guides on other academic websites. My guide, like theirs, is specific to the materials held in one library,
in this case that of Luther L. Gobbel Library of Lambuth University.
Both Internet sites and books are included under most topic headings. Information is provided relative to title, author
(or compiler, editor), and holdings location by call number. Unlike the subject guide for Bryn Mawr, I was unable to
make the holdings records "active" to the viewer at the click of a button. Lambuth uses the Voyager system,
and its sessions time out on a regular basis, unlike the Innovative system used at Bryn Mawr.
While Lambuth includes many more books than those cited in this guide, the books listed here are the major resources
for each topic and provide the most relevant information for the student as well as for the reference librarian. In
addition to books and websites, there are also links to major music associations and organizations, links to guides for
citing bibliographic information, a Library of Congress classification outline for music, and some miscellaneous websites
of interest.
