Application of Concepts

HOME

This course taught the basics of cataloging and classification.  Though I was already doing copy cataloging, I had no understanding of the mechanics involved in originally cataloging library materials.  I learned about the various media (books, videos, maps, etc.) and which lines of the MARC record include what types of information.  By learning this skill, I was able to direct and/or facilitate the cataloging of our entire video collection and music score collection.  We have also been able to correct numerous cataloging inconsistencies and incorporate tables of contents and URL addresses in our records for better searchability by our patrons.
